The Wreckless Farmer
Having been in ministry for more than 25 years, I have often been surprised to learn how people determine their standing with God. Some gauge their relationship with God by something they have said to Him. They prayed a prayer, and are now assured of salvation. That’s good; everyone who is an authentic follower has called out to God. But Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord! Lord’ will enter the kingdom” (Matthew 7:21). Others are assured of their standing with God because of a feeling. They sense it “in their heart.” This is also good; we should consciously be aware of the presence of God in our lives. But Jesus taught that our heart is a source for all types of evil (Mark 7: 22). Others find peace in the fact that they follow a list of religious rules or belong to a religious group. This can also be good, the Bible has much to say about our need forcommunity and the importance of worshiping together. But we must remember that Jesus's harshest words were reserved for "religiously devout" people. So, is there a way to know that we are "good with God?" Or has He left us to wander in uncertainty? Certainly not! God wants us to know that we have eternal life; and knowing this fact, to walk with joy and confidence in Him (1 John 5:13). How can we accomplish this and help others to do the same? In Luke 8:5-8, Jesus tells a story about a reckless farmer and shows us how we can know with confidence that we are truly in him.
