Tell Your Story

We have lots of good reasons not to share our faith with others. Like what, you ask. Well, they know us and our many imperfections; so, we feel like a hypocrite. They are an authority figure in our life; so, we feel intimidated. They have their own religious belief; so, we feel we are being insensitive or intolerant. They could know more than we do (or have questions we cannot answer); and we feel inadequate. But, on the other hand, we have one even better reason to tell people about Jesus! Sharing faith can be challenging, but what if there was one single "hack" that could help us overcome our feelings and fears? Imagine Moses trying to share his faith experience with Jethro. Jethro had come to know Moses personally over the past four decades. He had saw Moses at his best, but also at his worst; times when his anger got the best of him, times when he was controlled by fear, times when he did not at all act like a follower of God. As a Midianite priest, Jethro obviously already had his own strongly held religious beliefs. And he would have been an expert on religious matters in that region. And then there was the power dynamic of their relationship. Jethro was the authority figure. For all intents and purposes, Jethro was Moses's employer. Sure, Moses had gotten permission to take time off and go visit his family, but his trip took a lot longer than expected. While Moses was out on some sort of mission trip, there was no doubt work to be done back on the farm. But most difficult of all, Jethro was family. Jethro was the father of Mose's wife, the wife he had knowingly taken into a war zone. Jethro's grandson had managed to survive some sort of pandemic that killed all the first born sons. To say that Moses had to explain some things to his father-in-law would be an understatement. Moses had every reason to keep quiet. But he didn't. Why not? Join us this Sunday as we unpack this important question and discover a simple tactic for being more bold when telling people about Jesus.
